Half of an update

I saw the Orthopedic Surgeon Thursday. He’s recommending the surgery. Here’s a bit about the actual operation and another bit, and another bit. And if you really want to know the icky bits about it, there’s a video here.

All in all it’s not too ugly as far as surgery goes. No driving for 2-4 weeks, (I can be a passenger), no lifting, sitting for more than 30 minutes, and a few other logical restrictions. They encourage walking as much as possible after the surgery. Besides that, I can be lazy and spend my energy blinking and growing hair and be just like Dooce, without the anklebiter running around.

I also had the Renal scan and x-rays Thursday. Aside from a 3 inch long purple and blue bruise on my arm from where the IV blew, it went OK. I was watching the screen during the scan and both kidneys are working, and from what I saw, the left one doesn’t look very impaired. My urologists office called late Friday to make an appointment to review them, but I’m sure they only got the x-ray results. The radiologist that did the scan said it would be Tuesday or Wednesday before they had the report ready.

Once I know the extent of what they urologist wants to do in kidney surgery I’ll make the decision about the back surgery. Ideally, if I can do the back surgery first and then the kidney, I wouldn’t have opposing pain recovering from the kidney surgery. The problem is that it’s my left kidney that’s bad and I can’t lay on my right side right now for any amount of time because of the blown disc in my back. The back doctor said it would eventually heal on its own, but the immediate situation might be that not fixing my back will impede recovery from the other surgery. Once I’m fully informed I’ll make a decision.

So, that’s it. Half of an update. I’ll give you the other half after I meet with the urologist sometime this week.
